Patient privacy & consent

Patient privacy comes before everything else on MedScribe.

Last updated 13 October 2026

Before you submit

Before you submit a case, image or document:

  • Remove everything that could identify a patient: names, initials, ID and hospital record numbers, exact dates, addresses, contact details, and identifying photographs or features.
  • Change or leave out details that would let someone recognise the patient, where they are not clinically essential.
  • Obtain the patient's consent where your professional rules require it, particularly for images and rare conditions.

When you submit, you confirm that you have done this. MedScribe does not screen files for identifiers automatically, so it is your responsibility before upload.

What MedScribe does

  • Photos you upload have their hidden details (location, date, camera) removed automatically. This does not remove anything visible in the picture.
  • Editors check anonymisation at intake and return or remove anything that could identify a patient.
  • Documents submitted for publication are processed by our AI drafting service (see the AI use policy), another reason they must be anonymised first.
  • Anyone can report a privacy problem on a published page with Report a problem; these reports are handled first.
