Conflicts of interest

Readers should know about anything that could be seen to influence what they read.

Last updated 13 October 2026

What to declare

When you submit a case, guideline digest or poll, the form asks you to declare any financial or professional interest that could be seen to influence it. For example:

  • payments, fees or grants from a company whose product or service you discuss;
  • advisory, speaker or consultancy roles with such a company;
  • shares or other ownership in it;
  • a personal or professional relationship that a reader would want to know about.

If you have nothing to declare, say so on the form.

How declarations are used

  • Editors read every declaration during review.
  • A declared interest is shown on the published case page.
  • Editors may decline content where a conflict cannot be managed.
  • Sponsored content is labelled with its sponsor (see Advertising).

Content published before declarations were asked

Declarations were added to the submission forms in October 2026. Items published earlier show no declaration because none was collected, not because there was nothing to declare.
